The Anti-Algorithm Bagel

We've been making videos for long enough to feel the gentle tug of ‘make a hooky title’, ‘do a thumbnail with a face on’, ‘don't forget to ask people to like and subscribe’. A rare point of pride is that we've resisted doing any of these things.

To further our credentials as people who refuse to ‘feed the machine’, here's our latest video which combines Internet History, Usable Cyberdecks and Baking. It is destined to go down like a lead balloon.

A Hill I'll Die On

The internet used to be better (and not just because I could stand up without making grunting noises back then)

Compared to today's slopfest, there wasn't much stuff online, what was there tended to be more selectively chosen.

Before the World Wide Web became the default way to find data on the internet, it had competition. One of the two main services jostling for dominance back then was Gopher: a text-only, menu-driven way to browse information, curated by actual people instead of algorithms. Structured menus, maintained by humans, rather than an infinite scroll optimised to keep you engaged.

We used gopher, found some cool tools, submitted a recipe, and then documented the cooking of ch'bagels.
